Jüri Arrak: Interpreting Visual Archetypes in Estonia
This essay looks at The Illusionist (1977), a print by Estonian artist Jüri Arrak in MoMA’s Drawings and Prints collection, and explores the larger context of the artist’s practice.
Elnara Taidre (b. 1983) is an art historian based in Tallinn. Her research interests include modern (Estonian) and contemporary art and, more specifically, artistic mythologies in the visual arts of the twentieth century. She defended her PhD thesis “Model, Metaphor, Play. The Total Mythological Work of Art in the Context of Paradigm Shift in the 20th Century” at the Institute of Art History and Visual Culture of the Estonian Academy of Arts and is now Head of the Graphic Arts Collection at the Art Museum of Estonia. Her projects include curating Tõnis Vint and His Aesthetic Universe (2012) and Vello Vinn: Interreflections (2020) at the Kumu Art Museum (Tallinn) as well as compiling artist monographs to accompany the shows.
