In this 5 Questions interview, art historian Anthony Gardner reminds us to think of art historical categories as broad and flexible, allowing for new ways to study art in a global context. He identifies exhibition histories, especially in the former Yugoslavia, as a rich area of interest, as well as histories of writings on art throughout Central and Eastern Europe in the 1970s and ’80s as ripe for further research. Avoiding the transnational, Gardner prefers the international or “translocal” approach, to quote fellow C-MAP guests Maja and Reuben Fowkes, which acknowledges activities in different sites across national borders.
